CO-FOUNDER OF YOGA FOR BAD PEOPLE, HEATHER LILLESTON, EXPLAINS WHY.

Zoning out to me is simply spacing out. It can be useful and we all need to do it, but it should never be confused with meditation.

The practice of meditation is about concentration and focus, not too rigid of course, but sitting still and taking a moment to hone in on the “thing” and then digging deep and learning a little something about yourself, like your patterns and what is going on deep inside on a regular basis.

It’s a very powerful method of processing. I call it honing, because you are allowing yourself to take a moment to properly hone into a feeling, a thought, or obsession. It might be something you don’t have much time to pay attention to throughout your day that requires a little shift in perspective.

To me that is the difference between the two.
