Let’s do our bit for the planet. With style.
Every year globally, over 50 billion takeaway cups pile up in landfill, forming the coffee industry’s ugliest footprint. Enter the sustainable reusable cup, café society’s new must-have daily accoutrement and a stylish solution to encourage us to ’do our bit’ for the environment.
Here are 5 of our favourite keep cups that tick all the boxes – functional, beautiful and planet-friendly. Iced Almond Latte please!
Huskee Cup uses coffee husk to craft their keep cups. By using an organic waste material that’s produced at the milling stage of coffee production, sipping from a Huskee Cup means you are helping to recycle hundreds of tonnes of waste material from the production of coffee. Comfortable to hold and efficient at keeping coffee hotter or colder for longer, Huskee Cups also boast lids made from the same unique husk material, making them 100% earth-friendly.
Pottery For The Planet craft their beautiful limited edition pottery using vitrified ceramic, and because each one is handmade, no two are the same. Pottery For The Planet are big supporters of the Australian Marine Conservation Society, so when you buy your cup, not only are you helping reduce landfill but also plastic in the ocean.
Frank Green was founded in Melbourne, one of the world’s coffee capitals, by serial entrepreneur, caffeine enthusiast and passionate environmental advocate, Benjamin Young. The brand follows a philosophy steeped in passion for high design, style, and convenience. Each cup is curved to fit comfortably in your hand and is made using premium, safe materials like stainless steel and fully recyclable co-polymer. Design your own cup, choosing every detail from size and colour to lid and accessories. You can even opt for Frank Green Pay that is enabled by Visa payWave. A one-of-a-kind, built-in technology, it allows you to pay for your daily caffeine hit with a simple wave of your cup. Environmentally kind and clever.
Sol Cups are created by Bondi local Rebecca Veksler, who uses hand-blown glass to keep the heat in and the nasties out. Each one features a logo that symbolises the sun (‘sol’ in Spanish) and a zigzag pattern that reflects the ocean waves of Bondi Beach. Beautifully designed and customisable, they even come with a waterproof pouch to throw your cup into after use.
Claycup is the dream child of Sydney’s Pusher Espresso Bar owner Stephen Dyer and ceramicist Katherine Mahoney. Crafted on a pottery wheel, each ceramic cup is made entirely from clay using no plastics whatsoever. Claycups come individually finished in distinctive custom-made glazes like pink, aqua, concrete and charcoal that reflect the subtle hues and textures of Australia’s urban landscape. But be prepared to wait. Each cup takes three weeks to produce. We think they are worth the wait.
